Negotiating Skills for Artists and Creatives

Monday evenings 19th October - 9th November 2020

Negotiation is a key part of contemporary visual artists’ practice, encompassing many aspects of our working lives. Collaborative projects, socially engaged practices, offsite events, gallery exhibitions, sales, amongst many others, require multiple negotiations often over sustained periods. Yet asking for (and getting) what you want and need is often a nerve wracking experience. Even established artists have to brace themselves when approaching people they haven’t previously worked with.

Delivered by experienced art insider, Ceri Hand, in association with Sovay Berriman and Sara Bowler (Agile Structures), this short course involves three evening workshops and a bespoke Q&A session providing artists with a unique opportunity to develop key negotiation skills.
Delivered in partnership with Cultivator and supported by the European Regional Development Fund, HM Government, Arts Council England and Cornwall Council.

Realisation, or Hatching Plans

Saturday 31st October 2020
A four-hour, online workshop aimed at practitioners who have a project they would like to self-organise and direct. It was provided for CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Plymouth) a member-led network for the creative and visual arts community in Devon and Cornwall, including artists, producers, curators and arts writers. Join CAMP and get more information at www.camp-plymouth.org.

For those who have not previously organised and run their own projects, it can seem a daunting task. Yet being able (and willing) to do so, opens up new opportunities for others to see and engage with them and their work. Understanding what is required, together with the benefits of working collaboratively to realise ideas, will instil confidence and clarity on the steps required.

The workshop was be delivered as a series of steps designed to build knowledge, understanding and confidence to develop and execute a self-initiated project. Participants were asked to join the session with an idea in mind, whether they intended to see it to fruition or not, to provide a backdrop on which to map the actions they’d need to consider to turn it into reality.

Agile Structures is an artist-led project, organised by Sovay Berriman & Sara Bowler.
